Who Created Air Conditioning?

We all owe this modern convenience to a man named Willis Haviland Carrier. One fateful day in a Pittsburgh train station is all it took to inspire him to create a humidity controlling device for the building he worked on. Thus, in the year 1902, the first AC unit was born.

A Brief History of Air Conditioning

With a new device to control humidity, the idea skyrocketed into the Carrier Corporation, which used the Carrier air conditioner to cool the building. However, AC unite were not as they were today. They stood about seven feet high and six feet wide, and the cost came to over $10,000, which in today's market would reach over $100,000. The modern AC unit wouldn't come until years later as more and more people tried out different designs for the AC.

What Now?

Carrier went on the design models that would equally distribute air for theaters in 1922. Even then, the AC unit was still too huge and costly for personal use. That all changed around the 1940s when patents came out for smaller and cheaper versions of Carrier's original unit.
