Why Is My Furnace Leaking Water When The AC Is On?
We all know that it can be a little chilly when the AC is running in your home. But if water is leaking from your furnace and onto the floor, you may have an issue. Below are reasons why your furnace is leaking water when the AC is on.
Condensation
Condensation can be a significant problem with split-system air conditioners and heat pumps. When the evaporator coil in your furnace gets cold, it attracts water from the surrounding air. This is known as condensation, which can damage your equipment and home if not managed correctly. If you experience leaks, use a towel or blanket to capture water until you can schedule HVAC repair with Aire One in Toronto, York, Peel, Simcoe, or surrounding regions. To help prevent this problem in the future, consider having a drain installed outside your home. The drain will work to avoid water build-up around the air conditioner, leading to leaks and costly repairs.
Clogged Drain Line
Another possible cause is a clogged drain line. Since water needs to flow freely through drain lines, even the most minor blockage can lead to significant damage. To prevent this issue before it happens, now and then, inspect your furnace for any signs of wear or damage, including rust around vents and tubes. To fix this, you should flush and clean the drain line regularly. Also, consider having your furnace cleaned, as this will remove any debris clogging up the drain.
Flooded Condensation Pump
A flooded condensation pump can also cause water leaks onto your floor. This occurs when water pools around the base of your unit or in its pumping system, causing the pressure switch to activate the pump's condensate drain line. Once the pump is empty, it automatically shuts down until more water has collected in the reservoir. This cycle can repeat itself over and over again, leading to severe damage within your unit.
To fix this, you should replace the pressure switch and then flush the system to ensure any debris is removed. If this doesn't work, you may need to replace your condensation pump or clear out sediment in your pumping system.
